Matt Bonner, San Antonio Spurs forward/center, visited Ms. Lana Longworth's class at Harmony Elementary School in East Central ISD to read a special book as a reward for the young winners of a special program that encourages students to read.

The class won the grand prize in the High Five Readers Challenge, presented annually by SACU, Magic 105.3, and Luby's. SACU is proud to be the "Official Credit Union of the San Antonio Spurs," and has been involved with the High Five Readers Challenge for eight consecutive years. Bonner read Tacky and the Winter Games by Helen Lester, which coincides with the Winter Olympic Games, which are being held concurrently in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

The High Five Readers Challenge is extended to all Bexar County elementary schools each year. Its purpose is to help students in first through fifth grade to exercise their minds and imaginations by spending more of their free time reading. This year 566 classes participated, involving 4,614 students from 22 different school districts. The High Five Readers Challenge is part of the NBA's Read to Achieve Program, a year-round campaign to help young people develop a life-long love for reading and to encourage adults to read regularly with children.

A strong supporter of education and literacy, SACU's leaders believe that it is especially important for San Antonio to continue to encourage literacy, due to the recent findings from the "America's Most Literate Cities" study for 2009. San Antonio was rated #61 out of 75 cities across the United States, moving from #64 last year, so there is still a lot to be done.
